Phrozen Tough PLA Filament Black

Phrozen Tough PLA is a 1.75 mm FDM filament engineered for functional parts that need more durability than standard PLA provides. It prints on most FDM printers without an enclosure, runs on standard brass nozzles, and is suited to prototypes, jigs, fixtures, brackets, and workshop components. Phrozen Tough PLA Filament, Black

Phrozen Tough PLA is a 1.75 mm FDM filament designed for engineers, makers, and small businesses that need functional printed parts with better impact resistance and durability than standard PLA delivers. It retains the low-warp, low-odour, and easy-print characteristics of standard PLA while producing parts that handle mechanical stress, repeated handling, and moderate load without cracking or deforming.

Standard PLA is brittle under impact and prone to cracking when flexed. Tough PLA addresses this by modifying the polymer structure to absorb impact energy rather than fracture. The result is a filament that prints like PLA but produces parts closer in behaviour to ABS for everyday functional applications, without the warping, odour, or enclosure requirement that ABS demands.

Phrozen Tough PLA runs at a recommended nozzle temperature of 200 to 230°C and a bed temperature of 40 to 60°C. It is compatible with standard brass nozzles and works on open-frame and enclosed FDM printers including the Phrozen ARCO. No enclosure is required. The 1.75 mm diameter is consistent throughout the spool, contributing to reliable extrusion and even layer adhesion across the full print.

Common applications include functional prototypes, jigs and fixtures, structural brackets, mechanical housings, workshop tools, educational projects, and general-purpose parts where standard PLA is not durable enough. The black colourway delivers a clean finish suitable for visual models and prototype presentations alongside functional use.

Specifications

Material is Tough PLA in black, supplied as a 1 kg spool at 1.75 mm diameter. Recommended nozzle temperature is 200 to 230°C with a bed temperature of 40 to 60°C. Compatible with most FDM printers supporting 1.75 mm filament including the Phrozen ARCO.

What makes Tough PLA different

A modified PLA formulation engineered for functional parts where standard PLA would snap under load or handling. No enclosure required.

  • Formulated for functional parts that need enhanced toughness and reduced breakage risk on fine features and load-bearing sections. Standard PLA is brittle at thin walls and sharp features. Tough PLA maintains structural integrity across the same geometry without requiring engineering filaments like ABS or ASA.
  • Prints at up to 200 mm/s at nozzle temperature 200 to 230 degrees Celsius. No enclosure required. Runs on any FDM printer with a 1.75 mm feed path, including the Phrozen Arco.
  • Unlike ABS, ASA, and polycarbonate, Tough PLA does not require a controlled thermal environment to prevent warping. It prints reliably in open-frame setups across all ambient conditions.
  • Fully compatible with the Phrozen Chroma Kit multicolour system. Multi-colour functional parts print without per-colour profile adjustments. Available in 8 colours: Gray, Black, White, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Orange.
  • Stocked in Australia by 3D Cast, the official Phrozen distributor. Ships from our Bairnsdale, Victoria warehouse. No international shipping wait.

FOR PARTS THAT NEED TO HOLD UP

Tough PLA is the right choice when standard PLA snaps at thin walls, fine features, or load-bearing sections. It fills the gap between standard PLA and engineering filaments like ABS or PETG, delivering improved toughness without the enclosure requirement or higher printing temperatures those materials demand.
