6-Month 3D Printer Maintenance Checklist (Resin & FDM)

Luke Macwhirter |

Regular maintenance is one of the most overlooked parts of 3D printing yet it’s one of the biggest factors affecting print quality, reliability, and the long-term lifespan of your machine.

Whether you’re running a resin 3D printer for high-detail work or an FDM printer for functional parts and prototypes, performing a 6-monthly maintenance check can help prevent common failures, reduce downtime, and keep your prints consistent.

Below is a practical, real-world maintenance checklist we recommend for both resin and FDM 3D printers.

Inspect the VAT film
Check for clouding, dents, or stretch marks that can cause print failures. If it's been awhile or can't remember when you last change your VAT film now is a great time to do it.

Check the LCD screen
Look for resin leaks, dead pixels or uneven exposure using the screen test function on your printer. Screen protectors help prevent long-term damage, double check the screen protector's condition. Old or damaged protector will damage your LCD screen

Re-level the build plate
Even if prints seem fine, re-levelling improves first-layer consistency and places an even force across your LCD screen.

Deep-clean the resin vat
Remove cured resin debris and wipe with IPA or Monocure3d Resinaway to protect the film and screen. Even a quick wipe over your whole printer will help to keep everything in order.

Inspect & lubricate the Z-axis
Ensure smooth movement and re-apply lubricant if required. Have a good listen for odd noises when the Z-axis is operating.

Review exposure settings
Resins, environments, and usage change, it’s worth recalibrating.

Clean or replace the nozzle
Partial clogs reduce quality long before a full blockage occurs.

Check belt tension
Loose belts cause layer shifts and dimensional inaccuracies.

Re-level the bed & inspect the surface
Ensure consistent first-layer adhesion and surface quality.

Clean fans and vents
Dust reduces cooling efficiency and print consistency.

Inspect extruder gears & Bowden tube
Remove filament dust and check for wear or slipping.

Tighten frame & motion components
Vibration over time can loosen bolts and affect accuracy.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

If your printer has been running hard over the last six months, even a basic maintenance check like this can noticeably improve print quality, reliability, and consistency. Most long-term issues we see start small and a quick check now often prevents costly downtime later.

Regular maintenance also makes troubleshooting easier, extends the life of consumables, and helps your printer perform the way it was designed to.

Need Parts, Consumables, or a Second Opinion?

If you’re unsure what parts need replacing, what consumables are still serviceable, or how to prioritise maintenance on your specific setup, getting advice early can save time and money down the track.

If you need replacement parts, consumables, or simply want a second opinion on your printer’s condition, feel free to reach out. Whether it’s a simple consumable swap or just peace of mind that everything is running as it should, we’re always happy to help.

Looking after your printer properly means better prints, less frustration, and more time actually making things.

Here’s to a strong start to the year, cleaner prints, and fewer failed jobs ahead.
